What are PFAS chemicals and why should they be avoided?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of over 1,000 industrial chemicals found in many products including traditional AFFF foam extinguishers. Often called “forever chemicals” because they do not degrade naturally in the environment, PFAS have been linked to serious health issues including cancer, liver damage, obesity, fertility problems, and growth and behavioural issues in children. These chemicals can leak into air, soil and water, and studies show they are now appearing in the blood, tissues and bones of people worldwide. Fluorine-free foam extinguishers eliminate these risks entirely by containing no PFAS whatsoever.

How effective are fluorine-free foam extinguishers compared to traditional AFFF?

What types of fires can this extinguisher be used on?

This extinguisher is rated 8A 34B, making it suitable for Class A fires involving solid combustible materials such as wood, paper, textiles and similar materials, and Class B fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol, oils, solvents and spirits. It should not be used on Class C fires involving flammable gases, Class D fires involving combustible metals, Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats, or on live electrical equipment.

Are there regulations banning PFAS foam extinguishers?

Some PFAS chemicals have been banned since 2020, with further legal restrictions expected. The EU is enforcing a ban on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in fire extinguishers from 2030, with the UK likely to follow suit. How does fluorine-free foam work to extinguish fires?

On Class A fires involving combustible materials, fluorine-free foam works by promptly cooling burning material, acting as a wetting agent and providing considerable coverage to prevent re-ignition. On Class B fires involving flammable liquids, the extinguisher creates a layer of dense foam that rapidly forms a blanket on the surface of the fire, cutting off the oxygen supply and quickly extinguishing the flames. The foam blanket also cools the fire, further preventing re-ignition and providing lasting protection.

Can fluorine-free foam extinguishers be refilled?

Yes, the CommanderEDGE enviroFoam extinguisher design allows for economical maintenance, service and multiple refilling, making them cost-effective over their lifetime. However, it is critical that fluorine-free foam extinguishers must only be refilled with fluorine-free foam. They must never be used in fire extinguishers that have previously contained fluorinated products, in order to avoid contamination of the fluorine-free foam and maintain environmental credentials.

What servicing does this extinguisher require?

All fire extinguishers require annual servicing by a qualified technician to ensure they remain in good working order and comply with fire safety regulations. The service includes checking the pressure gauge, inspecting the cylinder for damage or corrosion, examining seals and safety components, and verifying the unit is fully charged and ready for use. Extended servicing is required every five years involving internal inspection. As with all foam extinguishers, if used even partially, the unit must be professionally recharged before being returned to service.
