False alarms are one of the most disruptive and costly problems in fire detection. They interrupt building operations, erode occupant confidence in alarm systems, and — in the worst cases — lead to the dangerous habit of ignoring alerts altogether. For installers, a system that cries wolf is a system that generates callbacks, complaints, and reputational damage.
C-TEC’s CAST-PRO addressable detectors are designed to address this problem head-on, using a combination of patented hardware and intelligent algorithms to distinguish real fire conditions from the everyday phenomena that typically cause nuisance alarms. Here’s how they do it.
The problem with conventional smoke detection
Most optical smoke detectors work by detecting particles in the air that scatter light within the detection chamber. The issue is that many non-fire phenomena produce particles with similar characteristics to smoke — vape vapour, aerosols, steam, incense, and vehicle or generator fumes can all fool a standard detector into raising an alarm. In environments like student accommodation, sports facilities, kitchens, or garages, this is a genuine and recurring challenge.
Multi-sensor detectors go some way to addressing this by combining smoke readings with heat data, but without smarter filtering at the hardware level, nuisance alarms remain a persistent problem.
Patented chamber design: filtering out the noise
At the heart of CAST-PRO’s false alarm resistance is a patented miniature advanced smoke detector chamber. Unlike conventional optical chambers, this incorporates a special non-prismatic bandpass filter that is able to discriminate between genuine smoke particles and many of the smoke-like particles that would otherwise trigger a false alarm.
This hardware-level filtering is important because it means the detector is doing useful work before any software processing even begins. By selectively responding to the optical characteristics of real fire smoke, the chamber itself reduces the likelihood of spurious readings reaching the detector’s decision-making logic.
Multi-sensor fusion: heat, smoke, and CO working together
CAST-PRO devices – part of the CAST addressable system – are available as smoke and heat multisensors, or as CO fire, smoke and heat multisensors combining multiple detection principles in a single compact unit. When these sensor inputs are considered together, the detector has far more information to work with than any single-sensor device.
A vape cloud, for example, may produce a smoke-like optical reading, but it won’t generate the heat profile or CO levels associated with a real fire. By cross-referencing all available sensor data, CAST-PRO can build a more accurate picture of what is actually happening in the protected space.
Intelligent algorithms that analyse and wait
Hardware filtering alone isn’t sufficient for the most challenging environments. CAST-PRO also runs onboard algorithms that continually analyse the detector’s underlying transient and smoke levels in real time.
Rather than triggering immediately when a threshold is reached — as simpler devices do — CAST-PRO recognises when a likely non-fire event is occurring, continues to monitor the situation for longer, and only raises an alarm when it calculates that a genuine fire condition exists. This approach substantially reduces the chance of a single burst of vape vapour or a cloud of steam from a wallpaper stripper causing a full building evacuation.
Crucially, this additional analysis time does not compromise response to real fires. When a genuine fire develops, the combination of sensor inputs and alarm criteria will be met, and CAST-PRO will respond quickly and decisively.
12 operating modes for different environments
CAST-PRO offers 12 different certified modes of operation, allowing the device to be configured for the specific risks and environmental conditions of each installation — not just adjusted to a one-size-fits-all sensitivity setting.
For maximum false alarm reduction, Mode 11 is the recommended configuration. This mode makes full use of the device’s multi-sensor inputs and algorithm capabilities to minimise nuisance activations whilst maintaining reliable detection of real fires. The ability to select the appropriate mode for each environment gives installers a practical tool for managing false alarm risk on a site-by-site basis.
Tested against the most common false alarm triggers
C-TEC have demonstrated CAST-PRO’s false alarm resistance against the phenomena most commonly responsible for nuisance activations in real installations:
- Vaping vapour — a particularly common cause of false alarms in student accommodation, hotels, and shared housing
- Aerosols — including deodorant sprays, cleaning products, and spray paint
- Steam — such as from showers, boiling kettles, or wallpaper strippers
- Incense — even when burned in significant quantities
- Petrol and vehicle fumes — relevant to workshops, car parks, and plant rooms
In each case, CAST-PRO correctly identifies the event as a non-fire condition and does not raise an alarm. A subsequent test with a real fire source confirms that the device’s detection capability remains fully intact.
An all-in-one device that also simplifies installation
Beyond its false alarm capabilities, CAST-PRO consolidates multiple functions into a single compact unit. Depending on the variant specified, a single CAST-PRO device can provide heat, smoke, and CO fire detection alongside a tone or voice sounder and a visual alarm device (VAD). This combination reduces the number of devices needed on a loop, simplifies installation, and can make a meaningful difference to overall project costs.
The full range is British-built and third-party certified to all relevant EN 54 standards by Kiwa Telefication, covering EN 54-5, 7, 13, 17, and 29 depending on variant. CAST-PRO devices are fully compatible with C-TEC’s ZFP and XFP CAST addressable fire panels.
The range was also recognised with a Fire Safety Matters (FSM) Award in 2025, acknowledging its contribution to advancing fire detection technology.

Where CAST-PRO is worth specifying
CAST-PRO is a particularly strong choice for any environment where false alarms are a known risk or where the consequences of disruption are significant. Student accommodation, hotels, healthcare facilities, sports centres, workshops, and commercial kitchens are all environments where its false alarm discrimination capabilities will earn their keep.
For installers working on sites with a history of nuisance activations, or for those looking to specify a detector that will reduce the likelihood of post-installation callbacks, CAST-PRO represents a technically sound and commercially sensible choice.
