How long do the batteries last in the WaterStop?

The four pre-installed CR123A batteries provide up to 3 years of operation under normal conditions. Battery life can be extended by connecting an optional external power supply (9-12V DC, 2A), which uses the batteries as backup power. Frequent valve operation or low-temperature installations may reduce battery life, making external power recommended for these scenarios.

Can I use WaterStop with my existing shutoff valve?

Yes, WaterStop is compatible with third-party shutoff valves that meet the ISO 5211 F03 standard. The valve must have a torque rating no greater than 7-7.5 N·m (WaterStop’s maximum torque is 8.5 N·m). You can purchase the electric actuator separately and mount it to your existing compatible valve, or a plumber can install a suitable valve before the installer adds the electric actuator.

How does the automated leak prevention work?

When connected to Ajax LeaksProtect leak detectors or compatible third-party sensors, WaterStop automatically shuts off water within 7 seconds of detecting a leak alarm. You can configure automation scenarios to trigger water shutoff based on leak alarms, security mode changes, schedules, temperature readings, or button presses. All system users receive push notifications when the valve state changes.

What is the preventive maintenance feature?

Available on firmware version 5.60.1.64 or later with OS Malevich 2.24+ hubs, this feature automatically opens and closes the valve at configurable intervals (7, 30, or 90 days) to prevent limescale buildup that could cause the valve to stick. The maintenance cycle only occurs when the valve is already open and no conflicting conditions exist. If the procedure cannot execute automatically, you receive a notification to manually operate the valve.

Can I control WaterStop manually without the app?

Yes, WaterStop offers three manual control methods: pressing the button on the electric actuator enclosure, turning the lever on the valve mount (with actuator removed), or using the Ajax app. The button control can be disabled in settings if you want to restrict access to app-only or scenario-triggered operation. The lever method is useful during installation or when the electric actuator is removed for maintenance.

What happens if WaterStop loses connection with the hub?

The device will display an “Offline” status in Ajax apps and send notifications to users and the monitoring station. The valve remains in its last commanded position—if it was closed when connection was lost, water remains shut off; if open, water continues flowing. Once connection is restored, you can control the valve normally. The tamper protection also alerts if someone attempts to remove the actuator while offline.

Is WaterStop suitable for outdoor installation?

No, WaterStop is designed for indoor installation only. The device operates in temperatures from 0°C to +60°C and humidity up to 95%. Installing outdoors may expose it to temperature extremes, moisture, and freezing conditions that could damage the electronics or cause malfunction. Always install in a ventilated indoor location that meets the specified environmental conditions.

How far can WaterStop be from the Ajax hub?

WaterStop communicates via the Jeweller protocol with a range of up to 1,100 meters in open space without obstacles. Actual range varies based on building construction, interference, and obstacles. The device requires a signal strength of at least 2 bars (out of 3) for reliable operation. If the installation location has weak signal, use an Ajax ReX or ReX 2 range extender to improve connectivity.

What valve sizes are available?

WaterStop is available with RuB ball valves in three sizes: DN15 (½ inch), DN20 (¾ inch), and DN25 (1 inch). Thread types vary by region—BSP parallel threads (EN 10226-1, ISO 228) for most regions, or NPT taper threads (ANSI B.1.20.1) for North America. Select the valve size that matches your pipe diameter and ensure thread compatibility with your plumbing system.

Can WaterStop work with hot water systems?

Yes, the bundled RuB valve operates with liquids from -20°C to +170°C, making it suitable for both cold water supply and heating systems. When using third-party valves, verify their temperature rating—WaterStop supports temperatures from +5°C to +120°C with compatible valves. Always ensure the installation location keeps the electric actuator within its 0°C to +60°C operating range.
