What is the ViLX-OSB-SS Type B Outstation?

The ViLX-OSB-SS is a Type B outstation exclusively designed for use as part of a disabled refuge system. It’s a fixed, secure, bi-directional, full duplex voice communication device that assists fire fighters and management during emergencies in high-rise buildings or large sites where radio communication cannot be guaranteed due to interference from fire plasma.

Where should the outstation be installed?

The outstation should be installed in disabled refuge areas, which are usually located in protected stairwells or stair lobbies. The unit must be mounted at a height of 900mm to 1200mm from the centre line to the finished floor level to comply with BS 5839-9:2021 requirements.

How does the outstation work?

Operation is simple and uses a single call/cancel button. Pressing the button once activates the call, and a second press cancels the call. The device features a green flashing button to aid location and a red status LED in the call button to indicate when it’s in use.

What standards does this device comply with?

The ViLX-OSB-SS is designed to fully comply with the requirements of BS 5839-9:2021 for use as a disabled refuge system (DRS). It also meets BS 9999 standards and EMC requirements EN55035:2017+A11:2020 and EN55032:2015+A1:2020.

What type of back-box is required for installation?

The ViLX-OSB is not supplied with a back-box but can be used with any “MK” style double back-box over 25mm deep. To accept cable glands, the back box needs to be 35mm deep, including metal clad surface types and plastic plasterboard dry liner boxes.

What are the physical dimensions of the outstation?

The ViLX-OSB-SS measures 146mm in height, 86mm in width, and 22mm in depth. It weighs 155g and is constructed from injection molded green polycarbonate with a stainless steel frontplate.

What type of cable is required for installation?

The recommended cable is 2 core 1.5mm screened fire resistant cable. The maximum distance from a compatible panel is 500m when using enhanced/standard fire resistant cable.

Is the device suitable for people with visual impairments?

Yes, the outstation features a Braille enhanced call button to assist visually impaired users. It also has a green flashing button for easy location and a high volume ringer for audio alerts.

Can this outstation be surface mounted?

Yes, the device can be either flush mounted or surface mounted. An optional brushed metal surface surround (ViLX-BSS-SS) is available for surface applications where cabling comes in from the back.

What signage is required with the outstation?

Once the outstation is mounted, the supplied sign should be placed adjacent to the outstation to give users instructions and identify the point. The sign includes operating instructions and safety warnings.

Is this device compatible with existing LexiComm systems?

Yes, the ViLX-OSB is fully compatible with both LexiComm standalone and network Emergency Voice Communication Systems (EVCS).

What is the maximum cable run distance?

The maximum distance from a compatible panel is 500m when using the recommended 2 core 1.5mm screened fire resistant cable, subject to the exceptions outlined in BS 5839-9:2021.
