What is the ViLX-OSB-G Type B Outstation?

The ViLX-OSB-G is a Type B outstation exclusively designed for use as part of a disabled refuge system within Emergency Voice Communications Systems (EVCS). It provides secure, bi-directional, full duplex voice communication to assist during emergencies in high-rise buildings or large sites where radio communication may not be reliable due to interference from fire plasma.

What standards does this outstation comply with?

The ViLX-OSB-G is designed to fully comply with BS 5839-9:2021 requirements for use as a disabled refuge system (DRS). It also meets EMC standards EN55035:2017+A11:2020 and EN 55032:2015+A1:2020, and complies with BS 9999 product family standards.

Where should the outstation be installed?

The outstation should be installed in disabled refuge areas, which are usually located in protected stairwells or stair lobbies. The unit must be mounted at a height between 900mm to 1200mm from the centre line to the finished floor level to comply with BS 5839-9:2021 requirements.

How do you operate the ViLX-OSB-G?

Operation is simple and uses a single call/cancel button. Pressing the button once activates the call, and pressing it a second time cancels the call. The outstation features a flashing green button to aid location and a red status LED in the call button to indicate operational status.

What are the physical dimensions and specifications?

The ViLX-OSB-G measures 146mm in height, 86mm in width, and 22mm in depth. It weighs 155g and is constructed from injection moulded green polycarbonate material. The compact design allows it to fit UK double socket boxes.

What type of back-box is required for installation?

The ViLX-OSB is not supplied with a back-box but can be used with any “MK” style double back-box over 25mm deep. For applications requiring cable glands, the back box needs to be 35mm deep, including metal clad surface types and plastic plasterboard dry liner boxes.

What cables are recommended for connection?

The recommended cable is Enhanced/Standard fire resistant, 2 core 1.5mm screened cable. This can be used for distances up to 500m from the compatible panel. Specific exceptions may apply according to BS 5839-9:2021.

Is there an option for surface mounting?

Yes, an optional green surround (ViLX-BSS-G) is available for surface applications where cabling comes in from the back. This surface surround is supplied with a mounting box and has slightly different dimensions (38mm depth, 290g weight) compared to the flush-mount version.

What accessibility features does the outstation include?

The ViLX-OSB-G includes several accessibility features: a Braille enhanced call button for visually impaired users, a highly visible green appearance for easy location, a flashing green call button, and a high volume ringer to ensure the unit can be heard clearly during emergencies.

How is the outstation connected to the system?

The outstation connects to the system panel using a 2-core screened cable. The connection includes line connections (+ and -) and incorporates a 10K resistor from the panel. An End of Line (EOL) device is also part of the connection setup to ensure proper system monitoring.

What should be installed alongside the outstation?

Once the outstation is mounted, a supplied instruction sign should be placed adjacent to the outstation. This sign provides operating instructions and identifies the refuge point, helping users understand how to operate the system during an emergency.
